About The Work

The title of Arahmaiani's work, His-story 1, suggests an interplay between the most "objective" of things - history - on one hand, and a personal twist and subjective interpretation on the other, while the number 1 suggests a multiplicity of interpretations. Her performance was founded on a powerful presence, threatening yet submissive and human. It was a comment on the violent events in her native Indonesia and in Israel.
