On the occasion of the publication of Brandy and the Psychedelic Mold, the graphic novel’s creator Ayelet Ben Dor will talk with the translator and essayist Oded Wolkstein about pets, travel stories and other sources of inspiration. The comics follows two characters, Brandy – a small, old and gluttonous dog who escapes on a bingeing trip to Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market – and the woman who is looking for him. After eating a mold-infested bread, Brandy is sent on a full-on psychedelic trip and Ben Dor’s drawings capture such altered state in which the pavement becomes an abstract composition, cats from Louis Wain’s appear to torture Brandy while his body dissolves into geometric forms and seraphim-poodles are luring him to join them. The drawing style varies throughout the comic book and features homages to Kazimir Malevich, Umberto Boccioni, Marcel Duchamp, Alfred Hitchcock and draws inspiration from traditional Jewish Ketubahs, 19th century sci-fi drawings and Byzantine art. The book, Ayelet Ben Dor’s first, features texts in Hebrew.
The event will be held in Hebrew.
