Rakonto Kun is a dance piece that takes place somewhere in the fantasy territory of ethnographic fiction. It contains the primeval and the futuristic, with a blend of absurdity, sorrow, darkness, and physical intensity. Alongside the ongoing articulation of an aesthetic vision based, first and foremost, in human movement, at the heart of Noa Zuk & Ohad Fishof’s collaborative practice lies the complex interaction between the ocular and the auditory. The way they work within, around, and against the audio-visual contract draws from a wide range of audio-visual traditions: sound art, film, ballet, pop, and folklore. Their typical interdisciplinary mixture of dance, sound and performance art, exists in its utmost complexity within the poetic space between the audible and the visual.
Rakonto Kun premiered in 2019 as part of “Noa Zuk and Ohad Fishof: Works,” presented at CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo. The re-staging of this work – four years after it was premiered and with an entirely new cast of dancers – allowed Zuk and Fishof, who also actively participate in the work, to revisit, modify, and refine their creation. The piece, tailored for the Marc Schimmel Multipurpose Gallery, located on the second floor of the Center, invites the audience to sit close to and around the performers, physically marking the performance space. The texts featured in the piece, some of which appearing in song form, are in Esperanto – the utopian language invented in the late 19th century by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof.
Rakonto Kun was created with the support of CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo; the Ministry of Culture and Sports; Mifal HaPais Council for the Culture and Arts; and the Yehoshua Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts, Tel Aviv.
