It seems like a shared field of numbness emerges, a dark frequency spreading as reality worsens. “Dark Meditations” is a new series at the Center for Contemporary Art, in which musicians and sound artists are invited to perform in deep darkness, approaching pain as a phenomenon to dwell in and observe, thereby shifting how it is experienced in the body.
Participants: Asaf Yahal Meluka, Aya Lion, Grisha Shakhnes.
Aya Lion is a composer, saxophonist, and sound artist working across a range of practices: performance, improvisation, visual scores, recording, synthesis, and the construction of electronic systems. Her work formulates in-between spaces that examine the thresholds between imagination and reality, presence and absence, memory and Forgetfulness.
Asaf Yahal Meluka is a sound artist who creates music from field recordings, found sound, and digital synthesis. In his work, he collects, deconstructs, and processes sonic materials into rich environments that invite interaction between the music and the listener, encouraging active engagement with detail, texture, and the shifting relationships between sounds.
Grisha Shakhnes is a musician working in the fields of experimental music and free improvisation, using field recordings and archival recordings as primary material. His main interest lies in inherent musicality and emotional load of everyday sounds.
