SWELL by Musica Nova is a contemporary repertoire concert which seeks to expose interchanging relationships among solo and ensemble, with pieces by James Tenney, Larry Polanski, Dganit Elyakim, and Carolyn Chen, performed by Maayan Tsadka, Adi Snir, Orr Sinay, Adam Cohen and Ayelet Lerman. Both pieces by Tenney, taken from the series “Postal Pieces,” utilize a compositional structure that quickly reveals itself to the listener while paving the way toward an experiential auditory surrender. Polanski’s piece invites the ensemble to transform itself from a collection of fragments into a unified solo entity. Elyakim’s piece offers a perspective of the solo as a dual relationship, a duet with an electronic system that presents the performer himself. Chen’s work maintains a relationship of separation among the instruments of the drum set to be mediated by the performer – a soloist that feels like the conductor of a drums ensemble.
