“Of the Grid” was conceived as a proposal to reflect on Nardeen Srouji's exhibition, "A Sole Cypress"—currently on view at the Center for Contemporary Art—through the Center’s video archive.

The evening will revolve around the notion of the grid as utilized in various video-art works. It will be presented by artist Muhammad Toukhy, who will discuss different types of grids, the patterns, rhythms and perspectives they dictate or reflect. He will talk about cartographic, tactile and digital grids; grids as confining systems, but also as hiding places; and the possibility of subverting them or subversion through them. The evening will feature an annotated screening with works by Doron Solomons, Ofri Cnaani, Nardeen Srouji, and Tina Jacob thought through various ideas in critical theory and in reference to the works of Mona Hatoum and Hito Steyerl.

Muhammad Toukhy is a multidisciplinary artist whose work reprocesses site-specific myths and rituals, exploring the politics and poetics of visibility through them. Toukhy lives and works in Haifa and teaches in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Haifa.
