Radu Comșa: inter-versions

December 25, 2024

February 21, 2025

The practice of Radu Comșa (*1975, Sibiu, Romania; lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Romania) follows a tradition in which the parameters of painting are treated as ever expansive. His works feature diverse as well as concrete materials such as paper, fabric, wood, plastic, and metal, and is based on the conclusion that painting – namely, compositions of colored shapes – is all around us. This is the case when one sets up a table for dinner; when we choose curtains and carpets to our homes; when we hang our laundry; when we see how the buildings are painted on our city’s street-lines. Another element deeply embedded in his practice is playfulness, which is also the guiding principle of his project for CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo. For his solo exhibition at the Center, rather than presenting his artworks as stand-alone works, he set out to create objects – between apparatuses and display devices – that respond to works by other artists that have been selected together with the exhibition curator. Entitled “Inter-versions,” Comșa’s latest project will continue the tradition of CCA of commissioning new projects by living artists, while spotlighting painting as a language that could be understood as constituted on production rather than necessarily originating in the studio.
