THE SEA BENEATH OUR EYES PLATE BY JORDAN NASSAR

Created by Jordan Nassar on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition presented at CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo in 2019, this edition consists of a unique variation of the iconic plates typically sold in the old city of Jerusalem. Painted with hues of Green, rather than the traditional Blue usually employed, this plate was presented inside the exhibition, alongside other kitchenware created by the artist in collaboration with artisans working in Israel and Palestine. The Sea Beneath Our Eyes – a sort of ‘souvenir’ from the artist’s own exhibition – perfectly encapsulates his examination of cultural heritage, ownership, exchange, and absorption, as well as emigrant nostalgia for the ‘homeland’ and its generational repercussions, whether in connection to his being American with both Palestinian and Jewish roots, or within the contexts Israel and the region.
