Artist Talk with Julian Röder About photography between protest and globalization Wednesday 27.6, 19:00 pm At CCA In describing his motivation as a photographer, Julian Röder highlights the attempt to find fitting pictures for the themes relevant to society. Such attempts are made, however, with full awareness that the complex structures of power and economics evade depiction.
The artist considers his work to follow a journalistic tradition, though makes no claim for the notion of objectivity usually associated with it. The images emphatically side with the protesters’ counter movement, yet keep enough distance to remain analytic.
Röder closely observes the spatial structures of power and its counterpart, being shifted to rural areas in order to avoid guerrilla actions and to better control protestors is also an element of this. Many of his photographs depict barricades in an otherwise undisturbed setting. At the same time, these document the tactical means by which the opposition forces its way through the blocked zones into the center of power.
Röder will talk about the structure and history of OSTKREUZ and about his own methods and works.
